Chief Posavetz’s sons testify in support of MacDonald bill honoring their dad

LANSING, Mich. — Clinton Township Police officers Ryan and Eric Posavetz joined Sen. Michael D. MacDonald on Wednesday to support his legislation to honor their father, Clinton Township Police Chief Fred Posavetz, who died in 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

“Chief Posavetz was a great man and community leader who served and protected Clinton Township families for more than 40 years,” said MacDonald, R-Macomb Township. “Sadly, a few months before he was set to retire, Chief Posavetz died last year as the result of COVID-19 that he contracted in the line of duty. While we have lost a dedicated public servant, his family has lost much more.

“I want to thank officers Ryan and Eric Posavetz for coming to the Capitol to support this memorial highway bill to honor their dad and recognize his decades of exemplary service to the people of Macomb.”

Senate Bill 1143 would designate a portion of Highway M-97 in Macomb County’s Clinton Township from Harrington Street to 16 Mile Road as the “Police Chief Fred Posavetz Memorial Highway.”

Posavetz grew up in Detroit and began his 41-year career with the Clinton Township Police Department in 1980 after earning a degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University. He became the department’s first K-9 officer in 1987 and 20 years later was named chief of police.

If the bill is signed into law, it will have no fiscal impact on state or local government. State law requires sufficient private contributions to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers indicating the name of a memorial highway.
